Flashback | Athens

Today’s blog entry is rather short, but worth mentioning because we love to travel. Also, not too many couples can say that they spent their entire courtship sailing around the Mediterranean and touring ancient ruins.

A few days after our amazing first date, Paul and I chose to explore the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. We left the cruise ship at noon and hopped in a taxi headed to the train station. Our stop should have been a 20 minute walk from the ship (possibly a 5 second drive), but the driver took us all the way around town to another stop about a half-hour drive away! Sneaky, sneaky. We boarded a tram and ended up riding for an hour before we reached our final destination; however, all the travel kerfuffle was well worth it to witness this historic landmark.

We passed by the birthplace of the modern Olympics on our walk uphill to the Acropolis. Once there, we strolled around for a couple of hours getting some quick shots of the Parthenon and the Theatre of Dionysis with my handy little Olympus digital camera. How appropriate! Then, we sat on the stones to rest and listened to various tour guides’ enlightening explanations of the site. After our brief stay at the Acropolis, we walked down the steep hill to shop. We found a Zara, a Morgan, and most importantly for this caffeine lover, a Starbucks. It was a blazing hot day and entering that air-conditioned coffee haven was beyond refreshing. Next week, Pompeii!
